Abstract: This study provides a detailed description on a rare predatory event of a juvenile ursine howler monkey (Alouatta arctoidea) captured and consumed by a sub-adult Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja). During ca. 30 min., we observed the behaviour of the eagle from the moment when the howler group was screaming until the raptor fed on the prey. We were able to do the first photographic account of a harpy eagle consuming a howler. The event occurred along the northwestern part of the Orinoco River Delta, Venezuela. This event contributes to elucidate on how raptors process large-bodied arboreal mammals.

Resum: En aquest estudi es fa una descripció minuciosa d’un fenomen rar, com és la depredació d’un juvenil de mona udoladora (Alouatta arctoidea) per un mascle d’harpia sub-adult (Harpia harpyja). Durant aproximadament mitja hora, es va observar el comportament de l’harpia des que el grup de mones estava udolant fins que l’harpia va ingerir la presa. A més, es van realitzar les primeres fotografies de tot el procés Les observacions es van realitzar al nord-oest del Delta del Orinoco, Veneçuela. Aquest estudi pretén esclarir com les rapinyaires processen mamífers arboris grans.

Título: Depredación de un mono aullador (Alouatta arctoidea) por parte de un águila arpía (Harpia harpyja) en el noroeste de Venezuela

Resumen: Este trabajo hace una descripción detallada de un evento raro de depredación de un juvenil de mono aullador (Alouatta arctoidea) capturado y consumido por parte de un macho de águila arpía sub-adulto (Harpia harpyja). Durante aproximadamente 30 minutos, se observó el comportamiento del águila desde que el grupo de monos estaba gritando hasta que el arpía ingería la presa. Se realizó la primera serie fotográfica de una arpía consumiendo un mono aullador. El evento ocurrió en la parte noroeste del Delta del Orinoco, Venezuela. Este estudio contribuye a comprender mejor cómo un rapaz procesa a un mamífero arbóreo de gran tamaño.

First evidence of trawling bycatch for Balearic shearwaters

 Abstract: We herein report two incidents of Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) trawling bycatch in the western Mediterranean, in May 2011. Both incidents, which involved single individuals, took place during the course of an experimental trawling cruise across the Mediterranean Iberian shelf, and coincided with operations when high numbers of shearwaters were present in relatively shallow waters. These incidents provide for the first time evidence of trawling bycatch for this Critically Endangered seabird. Although trawling bycatch events appear to be rare, they could be of concern under particular conditions, and further research is needed to assess the relevance of this threat.

Resum: En aquest treball es presenten dos incidents de mortalitat de Baldrigues Balears (Puffinus mauretanicus) durant activitats de pesca d’arrossegament a la Mediterrània occidental el juny de 2011. Fins al moment no es coneixien evidències directes d’impacte negatiu de les activitats de pesca d’arrossegament sobre aquesta espècie en perill. Ambdós incidents van tenir lloc en zones relativament somes en coïncidència amb elevades densitats de baldrigues.

Resumen: En este trabajo se presentan dos incidentes de mortalidad de Pardela Balear (Puffinus mauretanicus) durante actividades de pesca de arrastre en el Mediterráneo occidental en junio de 2011. Hasta el momento no se disponía de evidencias directas de impacto negativo de las actividades de pesca de arrastre sobre esta especie en peligro. Ambos incidentes tuvieron lugar en zonas relativamente someras en coincidencia con elevadas densidades de pardelas.
